From Ballet Class to the Courtroom: Why This “SVU” Storyline Hit Home
If you’ve watched Law & Order: SVU, you know the show thrives on “ripped from the headlines” stories. So when Noah, Olivia Benson’s son, swapped baseball for ballet in a recent episode, most viewers assumed it was a nod to that viral moment when Lara Spencer mocked Prince George for taking dance class.
Plot twist: it wasn’t.
The idea actually came from 9-year-old Ryan Buggle, the actor who plays Noah—and a dancer himself. Over the summer, he wrote a script about his character getting into dance and handed it to the SVU writers. They ran with it. In the episode, Noah sees dancers at Alvin Ailey, tells his mom ballet looks fun, and by the end, he’s walking into class in black tights and a white tee, smiling as his mom watches proudly.
As someone who grew up in ballet studios, this hit different.
Being a boy in ballet means constantly hearing you’re “brave” for doing what you love—and quietly absorbing that it’s still seen as unusual. You learn discipline, focus, emotional nuance, and how to handle pressure in front of an audience. Honestly? It’s excellent prep for law school.
In law, just like in dance, you have to be quick on your feet. You learn to think critically, take feedback, and perform under stress. Ballet taught me to hold my ground, even when people didn’t get it—and that confidence carried straight into the classroom.
So seeing a major TV show treat a boy’s passion for dance with respect (and joy!) felt huge. As Buggle put it: “I just want everyone to know they can dance—no matter what people say.”
And maybe? They can go to law school too.
