Fake Legal Quotes, and a Real Housing Crisis in Houston
So here’s a wild one: In a Houston housing case, a law firm filed a legal brief full of quotes from court cases... but 11 of the 13 quotes didn’t actually exist.
The case was about whether a woman should’ve lost her housing voucher. The Houston Housing Authority’s lawyer argued against stopping her eviction — and backed it up with a bunch of supposedly legit case law. Only problem? Most of those quotes were completely made up.
The firm blamed a tight deadline and admitted they didn’t do their usual review. They didn’t say whether they used AI to write it — but a detection tool gave it a 73% chance of being AI-generated.
Whether or not AI wrote it, no one double-checked it — and that’s the real issue. Fake legal quotes are a big deal. Law professors say stuff like this can lead to fines, contempt of court, or worse.
Meanwhile, the woman involved could’ve been evicted because of the whole mess. It’s a good reminder: if you’re going into law (or using AI for anything serious), double-check everything. Lives depend on it.
